[SONG REVIEW] The Chainsmokers & Coldplay - Something Just Like This
In "Something Just Like This", the repetitive music style from The Chainsmokers somewhat lacks originality and longevity with its signature "cookie-cutter drop" and cliche EDM build up. Similarities can also be observed between this track and their previous releases like "Paris (synth pad) and "Roses" (future bass synth and pop kick drum to name a few). Nonetheless, the simple melody works well, delivering a nostalgic feeling and loneliness to listeners' hearts as the song leads up to the chorus (and with some call & response in the bridge). There might be a bit too many highs for the initial synths given the noticeable sharp, sizzling noise. Though, the guitar harmony line is a nice addition in the final chorus to wrap up the track.
I used to have the mindset of making tracks with an immense layering of different instruments and effects to make it sound huge and impressive. What I realised is at the end of the day, it doesn't matter how complex the composition and production (e.g. throwing in a bunch of plugins) are - if the music sounds good, then it most certainly is good.
