[SONG REVIEW] Caro Emerald - That Man
[SONG PICK] "That Man" is one of my favourite pop-swing tracks from my jazz collection. The tight bassline, big and punchy acoustic kick, and saxophone riff act as the backbone of the song. High frequencies from reverse cymbals and crashes throughout adds to the tonal balance. Various instruments such as toms and brass stabs (in the bridges), electric guitar (in the transition break after the first chorus), piano (in the second verse), open hi-hats and the ride (in the mid 8) are all ornaments which create extra dimensions to the track.
The piece ends with an instrumental outro involving brass sounds and vinyl scratches. This is followed by a repeat of the instrumental intro with a monologue spoken by a male - the speech sound has been designed through EQ to imitate the sound when speaking over an old telephone (thus fitting perfectly to the jazz setting).
Songwriting: 8.5/10
Production: 9/10
Originality: 8.5/10
